What Is Fucoidan?

Fucoidan is a complex polysaccharide found in many species of brown seaweed such as Kelp, Alaria, and Bladderwrack. The name fucoidan (pronounced foo-koy-den) refers to a group of complex carbohydrates, called sulphated polysaccharides which are found in the cell walls. For the past decade, fucoidans have been studied extensively for their health benefits, ranging from helping the body recover from minor illnesses to protecting the body from major diseases. It may help to slow blood clotting. It may also help prevent the growth of cancer cells and may have antiviral, neuroprotective, and immune-modulating effects.

Potential Health Benefits -

  • May help to boost the immune system
  • May help to reduce inflammation
  • May help to prevent cancer
  • May help to lower blood pressure
  • May help to prevent blood clots
  • May help to prevent infections

The History of Fucoidan

Fucoidan is a relatively new discovery, but the seaweeds that it comes from have been in common diet at least since the 17th century. The people of Okinawa, Japan have been consuming fucoidans for centuries, enjoying brown seaweeds as part of their daily diet. Okinawa is classified as a blue zone, where people have the healthiest lives and the highest life expectancies in the world.

Fucoidian And Stem Cells

Stem cells are like cellular magicians due to their ability to transform into different kinds of cells. We rely on stem cells to replace cells that we lose from aging and other sources of cellular damage. They are literally our inner fountain of youth. Fucoidan may be a highly effective stem cell mobilizer. This means that it acts to help move stem cells to where they are needed for cellular replacement. In addition, fucoidan may help to amplify populations of certain kinds of stem cells. In addition, fucoidan may also help to rescue aging stem cells that are important for rebuilding the inner walls of damaged blood vessels.

Fucoidian And Cancer

Fucoidan may help overcome damage from chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Some believe fucoidan may even fight against cancer directly.

Two such effects are particularly valuable.

  • Fucoidan may help regulate key molecules that drive the destruction of tumor cells.
  • Fucoidan may help slow down the formation of vascular tissue that feeds tumor growth.

Fucoidan may also act as an adjuvant that synergizes with anti-cancer chemotherapeutic agents. This is a key property that makes chemotherapy more effective at lower dosages, thereby reducing its toxic effects.

Fucoidan And Potential Anti-aging Benefit

Fucoidan may help activate a key enzyme that influences lifespan called sirtuin 6, which is one of seven sirtuin enzymes that influence a wide range of cellular processes in humans. Sirtuin 6 is particularly important because it controls healthy aging by regulating genome stability, oxidative stress, and glucose metabolism. Sirtuin 6 is a promising target for several age-associated diseases, such as chronic inflammation, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and insulin-resistant type-2 diabetes.
